What is CNC bending
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) bending is a manufacturing process performed by CNC press brakes (also known as CNC brake presses). These machines can bend sheet metal parts from a few millimeters to several meters long on the largest industrial machines. CNC press brakes either have a fixed bottom bed with the V-block tool clamped in place, and a top beam that moves under the action of the V-blade tool, which is called down-forming. On the opposite side is the upper forming machine that moves downward and the upper beam is fixed. Both process methods will produce the same sheet metal part and there are no restrictions on the design of the part to fit either machine
A CNC press brake is basically programmed to accept a flat blank of a sheet metal part at a given distance, defined by a programmable backstop, the point at which the bend will form. The distance the programmable V-blade enters the V-block will define the angle of the final bend, the further the V-blade enters the V-block, the tighter the final V-bend. The final part can be a combination of different bend lengths and angles generated by the CNC program, positioning the sheet metal part blank at the defined positions and programmed angles

The maximum length of a sheet metal part that can be bent is obviously determined by the length of the CNC bending machine, but the thickness of the material is a function of the tensile strength of the material and the available tonnage of the machine to form the sheet metal. The larger the bottom V-block opening, the larger the sheet metal gauge that can bend the same tonnage. However, as the V-block opening increases, the inner radius of the bend on the sheet metal part also increases
Introduction to Bending
Typical CNC bending press brake top and bottom tooling for the production of sheet metal Z-bends. Combining some basic press brake tools and some clever programming, a variety of complex sheet metal parts can be produced
The CNC bends the bottom V block, the top V blade and the CNC rear stop to the left. The tailgate is programmed to go in and out a given distance to create the desired bend length. The bend angle is simple, created by the depth the top tool travels to the bottom V tool block
The top V-blade and bottom V-block are open, ready to bend the sheet metal part. People are often surprised by the size of the tool. This allows for very small bends in components such as ground tabs, returns on boxes, and angular profiles
